What AI-native actually means

The AI autonomy ladder we use to place every process, team and system

"What does AI-native actually mean?" is one of the questions we hear most often inside Fidamy. The term covers everything from a chatbot on a website to a company with no person in the loop, which makes it hard to act on.

So we made it concrete. Our AI autonomy ladder runs from AI that helps people with everyday tasks to systems designed around AI from the start.

The axis is who does the work

The ladder doesn't measure how capable the AI is. It measures who does the work at each step. That makes it practical: for any process, you can ask who carries it out today, and who should carry it out next.

What doesn't move is accountability. At every level, a person stays accountable for the outcome.

The five levels

Fidamy's AI Autonomy Ladder and its five stages

1. AI augmentation

AI helps people complete everyday tasks, such as drafting an email or summarising a meeting. People do the work; AI assists.

2. AI workflow

AI runs predefined workflows across systems, such as turning a meeting transcript into CRM records. The workflow runs the routine that people have defined.

3. AI agent

AI chooses its own actions to reach a goal. It reads a transcript, for example, and carries out the next steps itself. An agent does a task autonomously.

4. Multi-agent

Specialised agents work across functions, such as sales and legal agents onboarding a new partner together. A team of agents carries out a whole process.

5. AI-native

Systems are designed for AI first, not retrofitted, with interfaces built for agents rather than human clicks. AI operates the system; people direct it.

How we use it

We use the ladder to place each process, team and system, and to agree on its next step. It gives everyone, from engineers to actuaries to the commercial team, the same language.

Not everything needs to reach level 5. Some work is better kept human, and in insurance, decisions that affect customers need clear human accountability. The aim is the right level for each piece of work, not the highest level everywhere.

Level 5 also shapes how we build. Agents need interfaces designed for them, which is why our ChatGPT app runs on the same APIs our retail partners use.
