A small ecosystem, an unforgiving market and why the team matters most

In March, David Geier, Matthijs Kierkels and I spent a few days in London. Insurtech Insights Europe took over the InterContinental London on 18 and 19 March, with more than 6,500 delegates and over 400 speakers across six stages.

We started with the plenary session of the Open & Embedded Insurance Observatory, a member-led community of more than 40 organisations working on embedded insurance, organised by Yuri Poletto. From there we moved on to Insurtech Insights itself, organised by Kristoffer Lundberg and his team. Thanks to both for bringing together such a strong group of people.

Over those days we had around 30 one-to-one meetings, joined several plenary sessions and spent time on the floor seeing what others are building. Three things stood out.

1. The ecosystem is small, and generous

Embedded insurance in Europe is still a small community. It was good to see familiar faces and to meet new ones. People think along and offer to help, even when what they are building overlaps with what we build. It feels a bit like coming home.

2. The market is unforgiving

Just as noticeable was how many names were missing. This market rewards strong foundations, patience and a long-term view, plus some luck. Without them, it is unforgiving.

3. Fidamy is on the map

Across our conversations, people recognised what we are building. The feedback went beyond the proposition to the team behind it: its commitment, its mindset and its ability to execute. I'm proud to see that reflected so clearly. In the end, the team is what makes it happen, and building it is probably the most important part of my job as a founder.

What we'd like to see next year

More product demos, more practical use cases and more concrete discussion of how things are actually built, not only the concepts behind them.

It was good to step out of the day-to-day for a few days. Now we're back to building with our partners.
